Cellular Jail

The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, is a historic prison, it’s a symbol of India’s struggle for independence. Built in 1906 by the British to imprison Indian freedom fighters, held over 80,000 prisoners.

About Cellular Jail

The Cellular Jail is a star attraction of this territory and is referred to as ‘Kala Pani’, which in Hindi means ‘Black Waters’. The British had created this place to imprison exiled political prisoners like Vinayak Savarkar, Yogendra Shukla, etc. Bricks used for the construction of this national memorial monument were brought from Burma (Myanmar). There are 7 wings with three stories each in this building and was designed by Jeremy Bentham based on his Panopticon idea. The solitary cells did not allow interaction between prisoners.
